Dugang diri, may tatlo kita ka mga lower senses, ang senses of touch, smell and taste kag amo ini ang mga sentido nga napertenecer sa manumit kag sa survival. Tungod kay mga pari kami kag damo kami ginadumilian ilabi na gid sa sense of touch, maayo man nga ma-compensate sia sang sense of taste which is tied up with sense of smell.  Ako iya I am certain with the thought that priests should not be deprived of good food, and good cooks of priests should be awarded especially and even with something papal.  Nagapati ako nga kon pigado gani ang pagkaon sa konbento ang pari pirme lang nagaguwa kag nagalagaw.  Kag indi ina nami.  We are daily strengthened because Jesus gathers us in the one table of the Eucharistic meal.  A good cook gathers us priests in the one table of a good meal and a good company of fellow priests always begets perseverance and faithfulness.

Ikaduha, ngaa padunggan sang isa ka labing daku nga kandungganan  gikan sa Santo Papa ang cook sang mga seminarista kag pari?  Sa psychology naman kita.  Indi tanan nga pagkaon nga nanamitan naton kan-on manamit objectively.  Kalabanan sang mga nanamitan naton kan-on normal man lang ang sabor.  But because our brains can only take so much data from our sense of taste every time we eat, gina-trigger sang brain ang namit if a particular taste or food recalls happy memories.  So good food is not always primarily good because sakto ang spices, nami ang kombinasyon sang ingredients, nami ang pangluto.  There are also instances when food becomes so delicious, we even crave for them, because they trigger happy memories.  So when Chief Florencio cooks cocido espanol, arroz a la cubana, sopa de ajo, the memories of our younger days and the joyful fiestas of our youth in the seminary are recalled.  Bisan gani ang bacalao nga ginaluto sa tion sang puasa sa mierkoles sang badlis kag sa biernes santo, pati ina ginapaabot, gina-look forward – sin-o lang bala sa inyo ang naga-look forward sa beirnes santo para magpuasa?   Pero tungod kay may bacalao biernes santo can be nice. 

Imagine that, a good seminary cook can trigger happy memories while a rector or prefect can trigger traumatic experiences sa pari.  And to think that rectors are given papal awards.  Bisan sa amo na gid lang sina dapat hatagan pa gid gani papal award ang mga cook sang seminaryo.  Kay man ang pari with a lot of bitter memories will grow to become a bitter priest.  A priest with lots of happy memories of his seminary years can become a good priest.  Jesus gathers us in the table of the eucharist to remember, to celebrate that one joyful and happy memorial that proves to us and to all that God so loved the world he gave us his only Son for our salvation.   A good seminary cook can also gather us in the table of a good meal to recall and re-live our happy memories of community and togetherness, and that could proved enriching. 

I admit that this reflection on Chief Florencio is partly jest, partly real and practical, but there is no doubt to the fact that his life since he was 19 years old starting 1959 was dedicated to our well-being as seminarians and priests.  His last service was February 25, 2014, birthday of Msgr. Gene Velarde, the vicar general, where he served cocido espanol.

Would that be the last time we will ever have cocido from a good cook?  I don’t know.  But this I know, sang si Jesus nabanhaw gikan sa mga minatay ginsingganan niya ang iya mga gintuton-an nga magsugba isda kag magkaon upod sa iya.  Mal-i mo sa pagkabanhaw sang mga minatay manawag si Msgr. Gamboa nga nagasiling,” este Florencio, abi lutui kami cocido.”  I am sure that that meal will be eaten with a lot of happy and beautiful memories together.  And I want to be there even just for that, and I think many of the priests of Jaro will also gather.

Salamat kay Chief Florencio, salamat sa panimalay nga naghatag sang ila tatay para sa mga seminarista kag pari.  Salamat man sa Santo Papa nga nagkilala sang pangabudlay kag katutom sining Chief Cook sang mga seminarista kag pari.  Dayawon ang Dios sa gihapon, dayawon sia nga magahatag sa katapusan sing walay tupong, sing wala nagalipas kag wala nagalubad kag sing labaw sang sa tanan nga mga dutan-on nga kadungganan, dayawon ang Dios sa gihapon.  Amen.
